Citation:

Dr. Blazick writes in 'Chemicals and Formulations used to promote adventitious rooting' (page 138) in Davis, Haissig and Sankhla, Adventitious Root Formation in Cuttings, Dioscorides Press, Portland, 1988.

"It is best to avoid using full or near full strength (95-100%) alcohol because it may dehydrate and injure basal stem tissue".

He goes on to say:

"Lack of practical experience with this technique can result in killing or severely injuring cuttings during treatment. Solution concentrations must be carefully adjusted to the species and degree of lignification of the cutting; duration of treatment must also be not too long."

Other factors he considered:

  1. Alcohol evaporates rapidly therefore the auxin concentration of the solution will elevate as the solution becomes reduced.
  2. Too high a concentration of alcohol will cause the cuttings to die.
  3. Cuttings may drag in excess moisture to the solution therefore changing the concentration.
  4. Alcohol may absorb water from humid air.

Surely (3) and (4) may not be as important a consideration (in production) than (1) or especially (2).

Other factors to consider:

  1. Alcohol is flammable. Users must be advised not to have open flame in the area. Suitable fire safe storage must be provided.
  2. Worker safety must be considered. There health hazards when handling alcohol
  • Avoid breathing vapors
  • Avoid contact with eyes and skin.
  • Protective equipment must be provided.

Do not use ALCOHOL to make your plant rooting solutions!
You make fresh plant rooting solutions using Hortus IBA Water Soluble Salts & Rhizopon AA Water Soluble Tablets by mixing in ordinary water.

Hortus IBA Water Soluble Salt  and Rhizopon AA Water Soluble Tablet solutions contain the most popular active ingredient IBA plant hormone for rooting cuttings.

Generic premix rooting solutions use IBA dissolved in alcohol; these solutions often precipitate and require buffering.

Hortus IBA Water Soluble Salts are fully soluble in ordinary WATER to more than 100,000 ppm IBA active ingredient. The active ingredients stay in solution.

Hortus IBA Water Soluble Salts and Rhizopon AA Water Soluble Tablets are registered, have no special PPE and have a Zero hour REI.

Do not use alcohol on plants !

Alcohol will likely dehydrate and injure plant tissue:
Lack of practical experience will likely kill or injure cuttings especially if a high a concentration of alcohol is used.
Adjusting alcohol solutions for species & degree of cutting lignification is difficult. Treatment time may be critical and short. Wet cuttings drag in excess moisture to the alcohol base solution and will change the concentration.

Alcohol is difficult to handle:
Alcohol is flammable. Caution! Do not to have an open flame near use. You must have fire safe storage. Users must be warned to avoid breathing vapors, avoid contact with eyes and skin and use protective equipment. Alcohol vaporizes rapidly; the active ingredient concentration increases as the solution evaporates.
